Have you ever wished you had an invisibility cloak or gone looking for the end of the rainbow? Are you the kind of person who always wants to know WHY?
SPICE Camp is a UO supported program designed to engage young women in the physical sciences through hands on experimentation. Camp participants have the option of joining the year-round Optical Science Discovery Program that includes regular Science Club Meetings, fun science events, and opportunities to intern in real university research labs.
English Flyer (2018)
Rising 6th (& 7th) Graders - Science Discovery - Explore a wide range of topics from genetics & neuroscience to physics & engineering through hands on activities. Visit real UO science labs.
Rising 7th (& 8th) Graders - Forensic Investigation - learn how scientists discover what happened before they were on scene, be it a crime that happened a few hours before or an event that happened millions of years ago.
Rising 8th (& 9th) Graders - Computer Science and Engineering (aka Pinball) - learn simple programing, robotics and basic physics. Then put all three together to build your own fully functional pinball machine.
Who can participate?
Students who will be in the 6th through 9th grades in Fall 2018. SPICE camp is designed to yield maximum benefit to girls. Preference is given to girls and non-gender conforming applicants. For boys who are intersted in a similar experience, we recommend camps from the Science Factory, Nearby Nature, and the Boys and Girls Clubs.
What is the participation cost?
Camp tuition is $350. Some scholarships are available.
Camp tuition can be paid by check, cash, or through our eCommerce site.
Can I sign my child up for part of camp?
SPICE camp is designed to be experienced for the full two weeks. If a camper must miss a day or two we can usually accommodate, we do not recommend attending if you will miss more than 1-2 days. We cannot pro-rate tuition for missed days. Our costs are largely fixed, regardless of daily attendance.
Camp will be held on the University of Oregon Campus and is based in Willamette Hall.
Camp runs 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday. Additional wrap around care hours are available upon request for a small fee.
Returning participants from previous years are guaranteed a spot in the next camp. New applicants are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
All rising 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders who identify as girls in Lane county are eligible. As camps fill up we may offer applicants positions in a different camp in order to serve as many girls as possible.
